An awful lot of people on here who are regarded as insightful thinkers don't know what a radical splinter is or how it functions within a movement even after they spent the last ten years seeing it happen on the Left. This is arguably the most important dynamic of our times.
Social media provides unprecedented capacity for radical splinters to form within and infiltrate movements. They always work the same way: by introducing intolerance as fellow-travel, gaining support, and externalizing the division that results when the movement catches on.
Put more simply, they ingratiate themselves into a movement and start directing it in the direction favored by the radical splinter, which is not to the advantage of the movement. Eventually, some in the movement starts realizing it's going the wrong way and start speaking up.
In the moment those people, representing the true original interests of the movement, speak up, the splinter accuses them of being the divisive elements who are trying to tear apart the movement, which has already decided to go in the direction favoring the radical splinter.
Most people in the movement are following along and have no idea that they're headed the wrong way, so they're sympathetic to the splinter and its mouthpieces, and the watchmen are thereby vilified. The dialectic produced by this grows and strengthens the splinter.
